Maintaining Healthy Indoor Air Quality With Pets

Pets bring so much joy to our lives, but their fur and dander can contribute to indoor air quality issues that exacerbate asthma, allergies, and other breathing problems. Try these four tips from Custom Mechanical to improve the air quality in your home even when you have cats and dogs.

Keep Pets Well-Groomed

Regularly grooming your dogs and cats removes hair, dirt, and dander that can end up in the air. Experts recommend brushing animals at least three to four times a week or as recommended by your veterinarian and bathing them every week or two as needed. Dander wipes are available for short-haired cats and those who don’t tolerate brushing.

Get Regular HVAC Checkups

Periodically having your HVAC system cleaned and tuned-up by a professional technician can keep it running at peak efficiency. This helps purify the air your family breathes by removing pet fur, dust, and debris that build up in the ducts and filters.

Upgrade Your Filter

Some High-quality filters for your HVAC system are specifically designed for use in homes with pets. No matter what type of filters you use, you should make sure they don’t exceed the manufacturer’s MERV recommendation and they should be checked every month for debris and changed as needed (no less than four times a year). Dirty filters will have a gray appearance or be clogged with visible dirt, fur, and particles.

Deep-Clean Your Home

Frequent vacuuming of soft surfaces in your home, including carpets, fabric upholstery, and window dressings can remove dirt and particles that contribute to poor air quality. Dust hard surfaces frequently as well. You may want to install an air purifier, especially if you have limited ventilation or carpeting throughout the home.
