Bethany Beach, DE

One of the best-kept secrets on the Delaware Coast, Bethany Beach combines the charm of small-town living with the carefree ambiance of a summer resort. The one-mile-square city boasts a soft and sandy beach that rivals better-known beach fronts on the Atlantic shoreline, minus the commercialism that dominates so many seaside towns. Since the city's humble beginnings, the tight-knit community has worked hard to ensure that Bethany Beach retains her natural beauty.

History

Cut off from its neighbors to the north by the Indian River Inlet, the Bethany Beach region remained largely unexplored until the 20th century. In 1898, a minister of the Disciples of Christ church in Washington, D.C. named F.D. Powers proposed building a seaside town that could serve as a Christian summer camp. Powers helped choose the location, a contest was held to name the town and the church began raising funds for the town's construction. By 1903, the first boardwalk had been built along Bethany Beach. The Bethany Beach Museum located inside Town Hall contains artifacts and exhibits from these early years of the town's history. For the next five decades, a period known as the "Quiet Years," Bethany Beach experienced little growth. With no direct roads or railway lines to the town, a trip to Bethany Beach from outside the Delaware area could take one or two days. It wasn't until the Chesapeake Bay Bridge was completed in the 1970s that Bethany Beach came into her own as a popular summer vacation destination.

Small-Town Charm

Today, Bethany's population of around 1,000 swells to some 15,000 people during the summer. Around half of the 500 households that make up the city's permanent residents live in town. Most households are married couples in this family-friendly town, although single homeowners account for around 36 percent of households. Bethany Beach is a town that welcomes visitors on vacation while enjoying the benefits of a close-knit and supportive community year round.

Attractions and Activities in Bethany Beach

Between the months of May and October, the beach is full of locals and visitors enjoying activities on the sand and sea, including swimming, surfing and fishing. Lined with shops and restaurants, the half-mile-long boardwalk is perfect for lazy strolls along the beach. A live web cam offers a real-time look at the beach and boardwalk any time of the year. Cultural activities in Bethany Beach are centered around the Bandstand built on the boardwalk in 1976. The Bandstand serves as a venue for concerts and performances and hosts movie-and-bonfire nights on the beach as well. In the heart of town, the Bethany Beach Farmers Market offers fresh produce every Sunday during the summer. Access to all of the city's sights and attractions is easy. Simply flag down a trolley and hop off when you reach your destination. The trolley fare is just 25 cents.
